Meeting 24th March 2020 - Postponed

Talk by John Boothroyd

Power in the Landscape: Anglo-Saxons between Abingdon and Dorchester

Extensive excavations over the years have revealed significant Anglo-Saxon settlements in the area, including the large great hall complex excavated at the Sutton Courtenay/Drayton site (as well as the site of an Anglo-Saxon hall discovered at Long Wittenham about which the Society heard from the House of Wessex project manager last year - report here).

The Sutton Courtenay/Drayton great hall was possibly a royal centre associated with the early Saxon rulers of Wessex.  Was Sutton linked to the other Anglo-Saxon settlements?

John Boothroyd’s talk will describe the importance of these settlerments between Abingdon and Dorchester.

Venue: Sutton Courtenay Village Hall

Tuesday 24th March 2020 7.30 pm
